Captain’s Log - May18
Two wins from the first five games is not the start I would have hoped for, especially after jumping out of the blocks with a demolition of Church on the opening day.
Darwen are a fantastic side and it was always going to be tough getting anything there but the defeats to Crompton and Nelson were very disappointing.
The toss proved to be a good one for Crompton to lose as a boiling hot day belied the soft conditions underfoot. That’s said, our batting wasn’t good enough and application was almost non-existent from lads who should have had more about them. If we had battled to 120 I feel we would have had enough.
Poor bowling cost us against Nelson with far too many four balls served up and the age old adage ‘catches win matches’ proved to be as true as ever. Had we been abel to remove Nelson’s pro early, the game would have been in the bag.
It was great to get back to winning ways last weekend against Rishton with many notable performances; a real team effort after losing two of our big guns early on.
Despite the slow start to the season, there’s lots to be positive about. Ben Lord’s comeback has proved to be a real boost for us in all three facets, Aaron batted superbly at Darwen and Sam Lord has bowled exceptionally in the last two games, getting the rewards he deserved at Rishton.
The second and third teams have both started well and it’s nice to sit in selection meetings discussing some of the younger lads putting the first team players under pressure for their place. Dom Boardman, Luke Donovan and Jack Bradford have all performed well this year while Knightsy has stewarded the second team batting with great consistency. Cameron Holder has bowled well in every game he’s played, first or second team...he just needs to play more games!
Weekends don’t come much tougher than the one coming up. Burnley in the Worsley Cup and Lowerhouse in the league is as big a test as you will face at this level. These are the games where good performances are worth just that little bit more and I fancy us to spring a surprise or two this weekend! Until next time
